Detropia (2012)

The history of Detroit’s prosperity in the XX century is known to everyone – in the 50s it became the main center of mechanical engineering in the USA, the richest city in the country, where Ford, General Motors, Chrysler plants were concentrated. But after the economic crisis of 2008, Detroit is moving towards decline and ruin as rapidly as in the beginning of the last century went to prosperity. Residents are leaving the metropolis, the number of jobs has been cut in half. The movie tells about those who still refuse to leave the emptying city and persistently hope for the revival of former greatness.

The film tells the story of Detroit – formerly a rich and prosperous industrial center, but now facing serious economic, social and cultural challenges. The film focuses on the lives of ordinary people trying to overcome difficulties and maintain hope in the midst of crisis.

The documentary offers viewers a deep dive into the world of the city and its inhabitants, reflecting on the causes of its decline and the search for ways to revitalization. Through residents’ stories, archival footage and the authors’ cinematic eye, Detropia carefully constructs a chronology of the changes and transformations happening to the city.

Balancing on the edge between pessimism and optimism, the film embodies an in-depth analysis of American society, its values and how they are reflected in urban life. This work of art opens viewers to important questions, inspiring them to think about the future not only of Detroit, but also of other vulnerable urban communities.
