The Life-Sized City. Barcelona

The Life-Sized City. Barcelona

Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and in the semi-autonomous region of Catalonia, home to about 6 million people. Barcelona receives 30 million tourists every year and is a victim of its own success. Blessed with a temperate climate, great hotels, beaches, and some of the best restaurants in the world, the city government will have to find solutions to keep control of the number of tourists.

It’s no secret that cities are changing faster than ever. On every continent, in every city, big or small, individuals and groups are taking the initiative and bringing ideas to the streets. Together, they are creating modern, sustainable cities that are centered on the vision of the people who live there.

“Life-size City is a groundbreaking documentary series that explores the anatomy and vibrancy of the modern city, highlighting life-size pockets of goodness in cities around the world.

Organized by the boldly outspoken and charismatic Mikael Colville-Andersen, often referred to as the Anthony Bourdain of urbanism, the series reveals the inspiring stories of ordinary citizens who are committed to change and urban renewal.

Ideas that were once confined to a single neighborhood halfway around the world are being brought to the screen to inspire people almost everywhere. Life-size City is a catalyst for organic urban change, a gallery of the best and brightest minds and actions that make our daily lives better, from MedellĂn to Montreal, from Bangkok to Buenos Aires, from Toronto to Tel Aviv/Jaffa.

Each episode focuses on a different city and what makes it livable (or not) for its residents.

From ordinary citizens to urban activists and political leaders, Michael gives voice to those who go beyond stereotypes and dare to make a difference. He leads intriguing and creative encounters with those who make up the social fabric that is redefining urban life, talking about public space, transportation, family life, urban sprawl, bikeability, and green initiatives – all on a human scale. Talking to real urban heroes, he gets dirt under his fingernails and puts theory into practice by participating in amazing urban innovations.
